The Ghostlight Project from 2017 included a gathering of campus and community members who pledged to stand for and protect the values of
inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone.

91猫先生 has been a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) since 2000. In honor of Hispanic Serving Institution Week and National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Adams State Office of Title V Grant Initiatives will host free events for campus and community members, from September 8 and September 14.

Marcella Garcia, Title V director of the Caminos Activity and Unidos Equity Institute, and Ana Torello, Title V Conexiones Co-Activity and Unidos Activity director, have worked with other departments on campus to provide a variety of activities that will demonstrate what equity engagement looks like at Adams State.

Garcia said events were planned around the theme, “What are the Benefits of Creating an Equity Minded Community through the Initiatives at an HSI.” The Title V Grant Initiatives Office offers opportunities for faculty and staff to learn more about equity and inclusivity through special one-time grants. “There are many perks and advantages in being a faculty member of an HSI,” Garcia said. “For example, faculty members receiving grant funding for supplies and equipment or guest presenters for seminars, or workshops, professional travel, or classroom and lab upgrades.”

HSI week kicks-off with the second annual Adams State Theatre Ghostlight Project. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the Theatre Building. Led by Dr. John Taylor and inspired by the tradition of leaving a “ghost light” on in a darkened theatre, campus and community members will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

“We are rekindling the flame for this initiative,” said Ana Torello. “The Ghostlight Project will provide the opportunity for the campus and community to renew their pledges to providing a welcome and safe space for everyone.” This year, all campus academic buildings will be invited to display a “ghost light” symbolic of a safe space.

For several years, a Title V grant has helped support Kindred Spirit luncheons. On Monday, Sept. 10, in the Student Union Building banquet room, Dr. Brian Zuleger, assistant professor of human performance and physical education, will present on minority student-athlete achievement concerns. Dr. John Taylor will also talk about the initiatives centered on issue of social justice that he has led. Both Zulegar and Taylor are recipients of Title V Equity Engagement Grants. Later that evening, a Nutrition and Equity Workshop will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Alamosa Presbyterian Church. Participants are invited to the workshop for a presentation by Marlayna Martinez, Cooking Matters Lead Coordinator with the SLV Local Food Coalition, followed by a potluck.

Art and music will be featured on September 11. Beginning at 3 p.m. until 4 p.m., Dr. Leslie Macklin, a Title V Equity Engagement Grant recipient, will present a hands-on workshop in the ASU Art Building, Traditions in Native Ceramics. Macklin, along with her ASU students, will lead the workshop. Starting at 5:30p.m. in Richardson Hall a reception will feature Roberto Capocchi, a classical guitarist. At 6 p.m., the Adams State music faculty will perform in Richardson Hall Auditorium, ETHOS: Exploring Equity Through Music. Dr. Matthew Valverde, Dr. Angela Winter, Dr. Beth Robison, and Dr. James Doyle; were recipients of Title V Equity Engagement Grants.

On September 13 and September 14, the Adams State Office of Title V Initiatives will host panelists followed by round table discussions. Beginning at 4 p.m. the Thursday event will feature Great Stories 鈥 Latino Males in Higher Education and Friday will feature Great Stories 鈥 Empowering Women, A Call to Action. The sharing of Great Stories will be held in Carson Auditorium and the round table discussions in the Student Union Building banquet rooms.

A bonus event, the screening of Dolores, will be held on September 26 in the ASU Theatre Building. The film features Dolores Huerta, an equal partner in co-founding the first farm worker unions with Cesar Chavez. The film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change.

Since 2000, 91猫先生 has been designated an Hispanic Serving Institution. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) encourages all Hispanic Serving Institutions to observe National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) week. Each year, HACU Government Relations office works with several members of Congress to recognize the contributions of HSIs in their communities and submits a proclamation request to the White House.

Other events included during the week, not sponsored by the Adams State Office of Title V Initiatives, include an SLV Scholarship Summit, all day on Sept. 12 and Food Fix Friday, at 12 p.m. Sept. 14, at the ASU CoRE CASA Center.

ASU graduate student Chad Palmer tests out the Adams State Performance Lab new underwater weighing.

The 91猫先生 Human Performance and Physical Education (HPPE) Department has added an underwater weighing test as part of its affordable fitness tests available to the community. Testing will be located in the Human Performance Lab Room 106, located in the East Campus Building.

Dr. Tracey Robinson, professor of HPPE, and graduate assistants Chad Palmer and Kristoffer Mugrage will conduct the tests from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. every Thursday. Fitness testing appointments are required.

Robinson and Palmer can help identify current fitness levels and develop individualized fitness plans based on personal goals, needs, and physical limitations.

The fitness tests available are underwater weighing $25, VO2 Max $50, Wingate anaerobic power test $10, FitnessAge $15, and body composition $10.

Underwater weighing is currently the most accurate standard for measuring body fat. Subjects must wear skin-tight clothing for the test and bring their own towel.

The VO2 max test is an aerobic endurance assessment of the maximum amount of oxygen a body is able to utilize during high intensity aerobic activity. The lab also tests your blood lactate levels to assess individual lactate thresholds, which are used to determine proper training intensities for maximal benefit. Test time is approximately 45 minutes.

The Wingate power test is an assessment of anaerobic power. It consists of a 30-second maximal effort on a cycle ergometer. The test time is approximately 10 minutes.

Body composition assessment consists of skin fold measurements from several locations on the body. Measurements can determine body fat percentage as well as lean mass. The test time is approximately 5 minutes.

The FitnessAge test is a comprehensive assessment of muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Individual test results are compiled to give an overall fitness "age." Test time is approximately 20 minutes.

To set up an appointment, contact Robinson at tlrobins@adams.edu or 719-587-7663; Palmer at chadpalmer@adams.edu; or Mugrage at mugragekr_ga@adams.edu or 719-587-7246. Payments for testing must be made in advance at the Adams State One Stop Student Services, located in the Student Union Building. Hours of operation for the One Stop are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

in to Petteys Hall with help from brother Sam and friend Mara Schwiesow.

When Joey Murphy stepped off the airplane at Alamosa Regional Airport on Tuesday to begin his first semester as a student at 91猫先生, two of the University’s welcome ambassadors were there to greet him and even escort him to the local Walmart to do some shopping.

When Ryan Jewe joined the staff at Adams State in August, having arrived in Alamosa from Orange County, Calif., he didn’t hesitate to embrace the community, showing up at last weekend’s Kaboom playground build to support Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley, along with other Adams State volunteers.

You can say things are changing at Adams State.

The University opens its 2018-19 academic year on Monday, and with the new school year comes momentum and a fresh can-do spirit emanating from the University that has long sat at the "Top of the nation."

Consider:

  • Incoming freshmen numbers are up from a year ago, with Adams State so far enrolling 435 new freshmen compared to 392 in 2017.
  • Transfer student numbers are up from a year ago, going to 138 transfer students in 2018 from 127 this time last year.

Adams State’s official student census date is Sept. 5, which allows for it to account for ongoing registration as well as students who start and then drop out. The most challenging number will be returning students, which has gotten smaller over the past several years as Adams State struggled with growing its freshmen classes, and may offset the gains in this year’s new freshmen and transfer student populations.

What can be reported for now is a total student headcount that includes undergraduate on-campus and online students, as well as students taking courses via Adams State’s correspondence program.

Heading into Monday and the first day of class, Adams State has 1,849 total undergraduate students compared to 1,716 a year ago. That figure includes 61 high school students who are taking concurrent college classes, an increase from 27 high school students concurrently enrolled a year ago.

From right, Lathan Tsalate, Snowy Coleman, and Aaron Davis, new student orientation leaders spend an afternoon in training preparing for the arrival of freshman.

Again, momentum.

We鈥檙e excited to engage our students and make a connection with them,鈥 said Adams State President Cheryl D. Lovell, Ph.D. 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited for the academic start to the semester and to do what Adams State does best, which is transform the lives of its students through academic excellence and enrichment.鈥

Hired on a 12-month contract in July, Dr. Lovell is setting a new tone by calling for 鈥渁ll hands on deck鈥 when students and their families begin arriving on Thursday to move into dorms, take up residence in Alamosa, and begin acquainting or re-acquainting themselves with the San Luis Valley. The University鈥檚 effort will be to create a welcoming and supportive environment as students are dropped off and families head back home.

The University has hired 15 new faculty and 27 new staff members following its Financial Action Plan adopted last spring by the Adams State Board of Trustees.

Adams State has also put new programs in place to continue to attract both traditional and non-traditional students.

It is launching the ASU Evening/Weekend Associate Degree program, which allows students to complete a two-year degree solely by taking courses on weekends or evenings. Interested students, including those with current college credits, should contact the Adams State Admissions office to inquire about the Evening/Weekend program.

The University also has put in place a student artist-in-residency program. It allows for a rotation of visual and performing artists to set up residency at Adams State and complete new projects, begin collaborations, or spark new ideas. So far, seven artists have been selected for the program.

鈥淭his is a great time to be at Adams State,鈥 said President Lovell. 鈥淥ur goal now is to demonstrate to the students, and their families, that they made the right choice in selecting Adams State. It all begins this weekend as students settle into the campus and prepare for a great semester of academic work.鈥

Artist in Residency Program begins this fall

Anthony Vasquez, art alumnus, will connect with community during his residency.

Visual and performing artists seek ways to expand their talents and inspire their creativity. The 91猫先生 Art, Theatre and Music Departments initiated an Artist in Residency program this fall to present visual and performing artists with an opportunity to complete projects, start collaborations, or spark new ideas.

"For years, the visual and performing art departments on campus have wanted to create an artist in residency program," said Claire van der Plas, head of the Art Department.

Adams State’s Rare AIR will host six artists from August through December, starting with Kenneth D. Friedrich, musician, composer, from September 10 through 22; Anthony Vasquez, visual artist, from September 29 through October 6; TL (Toni) Ridgway-Woodall, visual artist, from October 7 through October 28; Franklin J. Stroble, musician, composer, from October 15 through November 3; Lily Kuonen, visual artist, from November 16 through November 30; and Briay Conditt, musician, composer, from November 25 through December 18.

The residency will include a pop-up art show or public talk, workshop, performance, or other community engagement.

The Adams State Rare AIR program will provide an apartment on Faculty Drive for the artist. All transportation, art supplies, and meals will be the responsibility of the artist. In addition to the accommodation, the visual artists will have access to a large studio in the art building and access to all workshops. The musicians will be provided access to the music facilities.

An Adams State student will have the experience of working with the resident artists as an assistant, if needed. "Being in such an isolated place, it is hard for students to get to see a wide range of artists and performances," van der Plas said. "Rare AIR lets us bring a diverse range of artists, musicians and theatre professionals from all over the nation and in many disciplines, including ones not represented among ASU faculty.

"It is really a win-win. The artists get time and support to focus, and the students get to see fresh faces and approaches."

Dates for performances, talks, workshops, and exhibits dates will be established and published as the semester progresses. "A residency provides an artist the time to escape their normal routine and responsibilities and give 100 percent focus to their work," van der Plas said. "We are thrilled to have the program start this fall."

There are several artists scheduled for the spring semester. For more information, contact the ASU Art Department at 719-587-7823.

91猫先生 volunteer in the community during the 2017 ASU Cares Day.

A new fall semester begins Aug. 20 at 91猫先生. With it, come annual events that connect new and returning students with the San Luis Valley and further an important ASU value: to promote a civic community of trust, respect and civility.

San Luis Valley civic and non-profit organizations are invited to participate in the “Here’s the Scoop” Involvement Fair from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, on the north campus green, located on the lawn in front of Rex Stadium.

Community groups are also invited to subject projects for ASU Cares Day on Saturday. Sept. 22.

The registration deadline for “Here’s the Scoop” event is August 13. The informational fair combines the Volunteer Recruitment Fair of years past into Welcome Week for greater impact. The fair is sponsored by ASU’s Grizzly Activity Board and is meant to give new and returning students a friendly space to learn about the many ways of being involved on campus and in the community during their university years. ASU student groups and community organizations are invited to participate by hosting fun, creative and interactive booths that introduce students to their purpose or organizational mission. Join the fun by handing out a variety of ice cream toppings as students make the rounds with their “scoops.” Let them know about your ASU Cares project and/or other volunteer opportunities. Past participants have also found the fair it to be a great networking opportunity.

The 18th annual ASU Cares Day will take place on Saturday, September 22. On this day, students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to join together in service throughout the San Luis Valley. Civic and nonprofit agencies may request volunteers for short-term projects that assist them in meeting a need. Projects typically range from four to six hours in duration and have included work such as harvesting a community garden in Antonito, trail work in Penitente Canyon, and cataloguing museum items in Del Norte.

ASU Cares serves as a kick-off to more ongoing and meaningful connections between the University and San Luis Valley community throughout the year. While many students are involved in short-term volunteerism, there are also faculty who partner with community organizations for student service-learning connected to coursework and internships that provide work experience for career development.

91猫先生 can begin signing up for ASU Cares projects once classes begin on August 20. Projects will be filled on first-submitted, first-filled basis.

To register for the Involvement fair and/or submit a project proposal for ASU Cares Day, visit ASU Cares. Direct any questions to the Office of Civic Engagement at 719-587-8105.

91猫先生 alumnus Joe Simo, principal of Centennial Middle School in Montrose, Colo., received the Colorado Middle School Principal of the Year awarded by the Colorado Association of School Executives, CASE, and the Colorado Association of Secondary School Principals. Simo will represent all of the secondary schools in Colorado for the National Principal of the Year competition in September.

According to the online article, CASE news, written by Melissa Gibson, director of Membership and Strategic Partners with CASE, his first year as principal Simo reduced the number of major office referrals from 200 to 45. He also mended a fractured faculty and staff environment.

鈥淚 enjoy working with middle school students because they still enjoy school and are excited for each day,鈥 Simo said. 鈥淭hey are starting to experience independence within their education and it is rewarding to be able to support them in that process. I get to help guide them on their path of learning and that is exciting.鈥

Under Simo鈥檚 leadership, Centennial Middle School has been recognized as a National Honor of a School to Watch from the Colorado Association of Middle Level Educators (CAMIL); with the Colorado Department of Education as a Promising Practice School for its work with Assessment in Literacy; and as a 鈥淒on鈥檛 Quit! Fitness Center鈥 by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and National Foundation for Governors鈥 Fitness Councils Chairman Jake Steinfeld.

He said Adams State prepared Simo to achieve a successful career. 鈥淎dams State has a fantastic education department that gave me an amazing foundation in education. I learned how to be a teacher and the basics of good student instruction.鈥

The School of Business taught him the skills to becoming a successful manager, including how to manage staff, market his school, and allocate the school鈥檚 financial resources. 鈥淲hen I received my graduate degree in educational leadership I learned how to be a transformational leader, what it means to be a great principal and the tools to make changes for the success of staff and students.鈥

Simo earned his Master of Arts in education leadership from Adams State in 2007 and his Bachelor of Arts in business administration/business education in 2000. While a student, Simo received the Business Student of the Year. 鈥淎dams State was an excellent school to attend for both my under graduate and graduate work.鈥 He also met his wife, Jamie, at Adams State.

Now Simo encourages his students to attend college with a special recommendation for Adams State. He appreciated the small class sizes which allowed professors to connect with students on a personal level. 鈥淐onnecting with your students is a proven way to ensure their success. Not only did Adams State teach me technical skills to be a teacher and administrator, my professors continued to model traits such as honesty, reliability, punctuality, and perseverance.鈥
