91猫先生 has been a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) since 2000. In honor of Hispanic Serving Institution Week and National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Adams State Office of Title V Grant Initiatives will host free events for campus and community members, through September 27.
Marcella Garcia, Title V director of the Caminos Activity and Unidos Equity Institute, and Ana Torello, Title V Conexiones Co-Activity and Unidos Activity director, have worked with other departments on campus to provide a variety of activities that will demonstrate what equity engagement looks like at Adams State.
Currently, the exhibit 鈥淧eace of Mind鈥, featuring two studio days of capturing photographs and stories, is on display in McDaniel Hall first floor atrium and continues through September 12.
HSI will continue with several events on Thursday, September 12. A workshop for ASU faculty and staff, 鈥淟eading for change at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI)鈥, with Gina Garcia, Ph.D., begins at 10 a.m. in the Student Union Building 309. The workshop will discuss her organizational framework for transforming HSI鈥檚 as well as her articles on leading within HSIs. Snacks will be provided.
Gina Garcia is a University of Pittsburg聽 assistant professor in the Department of Administrative and Policy Studies where she teaches master鈥檚 and doctoral students pursuing degrees in higher education and student affairs.
Following the workshop will be a Kindred Spirits Luncheon with John Noltner 鈥淲hy is Open and Honest Conversation about Race Necessary for Enduring Change to Occur?鈥, at 12 p.m. in the SUB Banquet Rooms.
Noltner鈥檚, an award-winning photographer, discussion, 鈥淟essons on the Road to Peace鈥, centers around the multimedia arts project 鈥淎 Peace of Mind鈥. 91猫先生 are encouraged to attend the event which begins at 4 p.m. in McDaniel Hall 101.
Molina Speaks will be back on campus for a faculty and staff workshop. The workshop will discuss historical prospective of Jim Crow Laws and how they relate to the San Luis Valley and Adams State. The workshop will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, in the Student Union Building 309.
On September 20, Asao Inoune will host a workshop 鈥淓quitable and Inclusive Grading Practices for Diverse Writing Intensive Classrooms鈥, at 10:30 a.m. in McDaniel Hall 216.
Inoune鈥檚 keynote, 鈥淢oving Beyond Standards of English and Literacy in the Socially Just College鈥, begins at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, in McDaniel 101. The lecture will include the problem with using a single standard of English communication in higher education and connecting those issues to broader issues of equality.
A Kindred Spirits Luncheon will focus on the history and research of Hispanic Psychologists. Presented by the Psi Chi Club, the event begins at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the SUB Banquet Rooms.
